Monday June 13 - continued

It's Sunday June 19 and we have just now been able to get to a WiFi connection that works.  Sorry for the delay friends but we'll post as we are able.

I'll add a few pictures to fill in the gap from my last post starting with Monday June 13.

Ski jumps at the Salt Lake City Olympic Village

Tuesday June 14
Salt Lake City to north west Nevada

What in the world is this???    in the Great Salt Desert

Boneville Salt Flats,
Hallowed ground on which offerings are made to the god of speed...

Rebecca at Bonneville.

Group shot at Bonneville
We were a little tempted to take the bikes onto the salt flats but with an inch of water out there it wasn't going to happen.

Hope you're felling better Dan

A couple miles of road construction on I-80 - after which Rebecca says:
"Dad there are 920 of those cone-things"
Not that she was bored or anything.

We stopped in Winnemucca, Nevada for some provisions and found this log

Rural Nevada homes often have long driveways and large mailboxes.
We noticed many use 55 gallon drums as mail boxes for those 'larger' deliveries while a normal mailbox sits on top of that

How do these things work?
Standing in the middle of Nevada highway 140

Beside Nevada Hwy 140

Sunset over the Nevada desert

Are you sure the map showed a state campground out here?
One of our favourite campsites was 2.4 miles off the highway.
This is starting to look like dual-sport territory

Our most isolated camp offered spectacular desert views and 3 wild horses playing about 200 yards away beyond the 'lake'

Checking out the moon-rise

Bedtime

Wednesday June 15
NW Nevada to Crater Lake Oregon

Ok I made the pancakes now where's my coffee?

An isolated windmill

Nevada Hwy 140

Open-range terratory - watch for cows on road...

...and Prong-horn Antelope

one of my favourite road signs...

The highway dropped down about 1400 feet from the plateau to the valley floor.
3 twisty miles of 8% grade

After 89 miles through the desert with no service even $4.30 per gallon was a welcome sight

Our gas stop was in beautiful downtown Adel, Oregon

South Central Oregon on Hwy 140

Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake received 20 feet of snow this winter and still had plenty in the middle of June.

Coming down off Crater Lake

Thursday June 16
Crater Lake Oregon to Gold Beach Oregon via California Redwoods

Lunch with cousins in Grants Pass - Thanks Donna

Waiting for road construction

Inside the tunnel

The tree was THIS BIG!

California Redwoods.... they don't look so red but they sure are big!

Now THAT'S a TREE!

These are really big trees!

I can't fit the whole thing in the viewfinder

This might look interesting...

...here's the shot - what do you think?

hmmm... what if I do this with the camera???

Here's the result

So far, so good - but this is starting to look like GS territory

End of the road - ST's are not amphibious

So, back out the way we came

Highway 101 - the Pacific Coast Highway

There was no 'Welcome to Oregon' on Hwy 140 when we entered Oregon from Nevada so we got this one as we crossed from California.

Oregon coast

Oregon coast

more Oregon coast

still more Oregon coast

and again...

still more...

how can a person get tired of this?

ok, last one

Camped north of Gold Beach, Oregon at Humbug Mountain State Park

preparing a pre-bedtime snack

  3. Cool stuff man. I can only imagine the experience Rebecca is having...I hope Olivia and I can do the same some day...an inspiration.

My favorites so far: "Mmmmm,pancakes"..."one of my favorite signs!" and "Oregon coast" reminds me of a trip Kristi and I took down the coast to LA when we were first married. Awesome. And finally, the answer to your Statue in Utah question is: a Tennis Ball tree, made by a Swedish guy, took him 6 years. I sent you an email on it...found it on weird U.S. website.

    Ride on.
